About East Anglia
Originally comprising the counties of Norfolk and
Suffolk, The ancient kingdom of East Anglia has been expanded to
include Essex and as such forms the bump on England’s eastern
coast to the south.
Within its bounds are The Norfolk and Suffolk broads,
a national park and three areas officially designated “Areas
of Outstanding Natural Beauty” Many examples of ancient and
historic architecture exist still, restored and preserved for the
future enjoyment of locals and visitors alike.
East Anglian life is politely described in many a
brochure and on many a website as “rural”. By definition,
an area characteristic of farming or country life. A sparsely settled
place away from the influences of large cities. All this peace,
calm and tranquillity within easy reach via road or rail of some
of the busiest cities in the country. What better place then, to
live and work having retained much of its character, unspoilt landscape,
architecture and traditions, than Constable country?
Located directly north of London the area is well
served by road and rail communications making it an ideal home base
for anyone looking for an easy commute.
Norfolk
As diverse as it is flat, the busy cosmopolitan Norwich
with its city centre shopping, ancient buildings, cathedral and
castle. Its vibrant cultural scene and fringe theatre against the
natural beauty and peace of Britain’s largest protected wetland
“The Broads” with its waterways and nature reserves.
Norfolk’s coastline, itself an Area of Outstanding
Natural Beauty consists of unspoilt beaches, flint built villages
and nature reserves.
Move inland and the delights of traditional market towns such as
Aylsham await with Blickling Hall, the reputed birthplace of Anne
Boleyn (Henry’s 2nd wife) just a short drive away.
Other attractions are Dereham and Fakenham, both again,
traditional market towns.
Kings Lynn dates to the 12th century and the splendour of Royal
Sandringham is close by.

Suffolk
A sublime county, filling the newcomer with a sense
of awe at the sights, sounds and natural beauty of the rolling country
landscape. Small wonder then, that Constable felt compelled to record
these wonders and a testament to the enduring quality of life that
this area bestows upon it’s inhabitants.
Whether choosing Suffolk for the first time or moving
from within its bounds one cannot fail to be astonished by its breathtaking
views. This quintessentially English county affords the newcomer
a fine array of walks and cycle rides along picture book country
lanes to peaceful destinations along the coast.
The coastal towns of Southwold and Aldeburgh are a
delight as are the more inland market towns of Wickam and Needham
Markets.

Essex
Essex is home to Britain’s oldest recorded town,
Colchester, where you’ll find a Norman Castle Keep, some Roman
remains and a great shopping centre.
North from here and we’re back in Constable country, in the
town of Dedham, a beautifully picturesque location with many ancient
and listed buildings.
The coastline of Essex is in the main, unspoilt with saltmarshes
and mudflats providing a haven for bird and wildlife.
The yachting centres at Brightlingsea and Burnhan-on-Crouch
offer mooring facilities and for all the fun of the seaside, a visit
to the piers at Clacton and Southend is a must.
From cream teas at Tiptree to cockles at Leigh-on-Sea right through
to shopping at Lakeside Thurrock, Essex, the county of contrast,
has it all. |
