About Basal
Switzerland’s second largest city, Basal is situated just inside Switzerland's borders. Close to neighbouring countries, France and Germany it shares its “Euro Airport” with Mulhouse in France and Freiburg im Breisgau in Germany. It is well placed as a stop off point for cruises down the Rhine from Germany and Holland and an important link in the trans European railways from Paris, Brussels, Frankfurt, and other major European cities. This central location makes it an ideal communications point for Switzerland and the rest of Europe.
A compact city, you can reach anywhere fairly quickly by bicycle, tram or train and you are encouraged to do so, rather than use the car. Theatre and the Arts are alive and well here and a great choice of restaurants, exciting nightlife and interesting mix of cultures and nationalities make Basal a truly international city.
One of the highlights of Basal’s year is the annual carnival. This three-day event turns the city inside out in a riot of music, drama and colour. Taking place at the end of February/beginning of March it is heralded by a huge lantern procession at 4 am during which all electric light in the city is turned off. The city vibrates to the sound of marching drums and pipes and revellers and spectators stay up late into the night.
