Removals to Europe, UK and Overseas Moving Service

Removals to Cyprus | A Guide to Life in Protaras

Removals to Cyprus | A Guide to Life in Protaras

Are you considering arranging removals to Cyprus? If so, you will be in good company, since it’s estimated that more than 38,000 British people already live there, making it one of Europe’s top destinations for expats. Hamiltons regularly arranges overseas moves to Cyprus and can organise the services you need, including the provision of a professional packing service if required.

One of the most popular places for people moving from the UK to live on the island is the holiday town of Protaras, on the south-east coast, which is known for its golden beaches and attractive old buildings. Many people retiring to Cyprus decide to move to this area, as well as families.

Protaras is a vibrant, busy resort, with a population of over 20,000, in addition to the large numbers of tourists who visit the area every year. The town has a wide number of hotels, restaurants and pubs serving traditional Cypriot dishes, as well as a good range of shops. It is also known as a popular water sports centre.

Popular Neighbourhoods

Protaras has grown in popularity since the 1980s and become known as a family resort, presenting a contrast with the neighbouring town of Agia Napa, which has more of a clubbing and partying culture. Many expats invest in villas or apartments near the sea, often as holiday homes where they will live for part of the year. Many attractive villas are close to the famous Fig Tree Bay, known as one of Europe’s top beaches. Kapparis is one of the most popular residential areas of Protaras, lying right on the coast.

It is possible to explore much of the area on foot, enjoying the Mediterranean climate and discovering some beautiful nature trails. One of the town’s main landmarks is the Profitis Ilias church, which is at the top of a steep hill. Once you climb up more than 100 steps, you will be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding area, while the church itself also has many interesting artefacts to view. Another top place to visit is Cape Greco, a headland at the southern end of Famagusta Bay, which has been designated as a natural forest park.

Many expats choose to live in the neighbouring town of Paralimni, slightly inland, which has around 15,000 inhabitants. This has seen rapid growth over recent years, with some modern properties being built, but still has the feel of a traditional Cypriot community. Other small towns and villages in the area which expats may consider moving to include Frenaros and Sotira.

Education

A popular international school in the area is the private Xenion High School in Paralimni, which opened in 2002, which is based in new buildings and offers teaching in both English and Greek. It has a junior school for 6 to 12-year-olds, as well as a high school and a variety of clubs and societies. There is also a language institute attached to Xenion.

In addition, there are English language nurseries available in the area, including Cots2Tots kindergarten in Protaras, which works in accordance with UK good practice guides and regulations.

Job Options

Although many people in Cyprus do speak English, it is helpful to know some Greek when applying for jobs. Many British expats work in the tourist industry, which is essential to the economy in the Protaras district. This includes many jobs in the nightlife industry, ranging from work in bars to publicity for nightspots. Other sectors employing many people from the UK include financial and business services, construction, sales and the field of IT and technology.

Another popular career option is to teach English as a foreign language in a private language school, but for this you will normally be required to have a BA degree and a qualification in TEFL. There are various recruitment websites and newspapers which advertise jobs in Cyprus for English speakers.
