What is a Classic Car?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The definitions of what constitutes a classic car vary by country. For example, in the UK if the vehicle was built more than 40 years ago it doesn\u2019t have to pay road tax, nor does it have to pass an annual MOT (but it can still undergo one voluntarily). The British tax authorities, HMRC, define a classic car for company taxation purposes as being over 15 years old and having a value over \u00a315,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the USA, the term is loosely used to define any car over 20 years old; in Australia and Canada it\u2019s usually 25 years. However, it is possible for a car to be designated a \u2018modern classic\u2019 which is a newer vehicle with the appearance of a classic car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beauty and styling are other factors, and this is very subjective \u2013 there is usually some consensus in the world of motoring enthusiasts, and in the trade magazines, of what comes into the category. However, the following five certainly fit the description of \u2018classic\u2019, wherever you are in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The E-type Jaguar<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 1960s versions of this marque, above, are widely acknowledged to be \u2018the most beautiful car ever made\u2019. With its lightweight aluminium body, powerful engine, and smooth handling, it soon became a favourite among enthusiasts. \u00a0It was coveted by celebrities and car aficionados alike \u2013 and, like several other beautiful British classic cars, it\u2019s made an appearance in a James Bond film (Die Another Day<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One version \u2013 A Series 1 Roadster \u2013 sold for $300,000 at Sotheby\u2019s, the high-end auctioneers, as recently as 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Porsche 911<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This Porsche also dates back to the 1960s \u2013 its distinctive round headlights, long hood, and sloping roofline combine to make it instantly recognisable. As with the E-type Jaguar, there is recent evidence of how much the right model and make can fetch \u2013 two years ago, a Porsche 911 Turbo S sold for $1.3million.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One reason this model has a high value is because they were produced in such limited numbers, making them highly sought-after by collectors and enthusiasts alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Aston Martin DB5<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another 60s classic, this one shot to fame after its appearance in the Bond film Goldfinger<\/em>. Its long hood, sleek lines and luxurious interior made it an instant favourite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, the production models weren\u2019t fitted with all the gizmos that 007 enjoyed \u2013 ejector seat, revolving number plates, machine guns, oil and nail sprayers \u2013 but it was still a delight to drive. And perhaps the mapping system the car was fitted with wasn\u2019t all that far-fetched \u2013 it was a precursor to today\u2019s SatNavs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lamborgini Countach<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a more recent addition to the \u2018classic\u2019 classification, from the 1970s and from Italy. The Countach is notable for its wedge-shaped design and its speed \u2013 the V12 engine meant it could go from 0-60 in just 5.4 seconds, which is still rapid even today. It was also one of the first cars to feature carbon-fibre in its construction. The Countach was also made in fairly limited numbers, which means it holds its value well today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mini Cooper<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Contrary to popular belief, not all classics have to be high-performance sports cars. The Mini Cooper \u2013 certainly in its early incarnations, and particularly the \u2018S\u2019 marque from the early 1960s to the early 1970s \u2013 can be put into this category. The Cooper (above) was so popular that Rover ensured it went back into production it when it took over the brand in the 1990s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s instantly recognisable for its square body, round headlights and chrome bumpers; it\u2019s also very fuel efficient and ideal for driving around town. Back in the 60s it was seen as the epitome of \u2018cool\u2019, perhaps best summed up by its appearance in the famous Michael Caine film, The Italian Job<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
