During the 6th<\/sup>\nCentury, the Kingdom of the East Angles was founded by the Angles, one of the\ntribes who invaded Britain after the Roman occupation. The new kingdom was made\nup of two separate groups, the North Folk (Norfolk) and the South Folk\n(Suffolk). <\/p>\n\n\n\n The problem\nwas there was no clear land border between the two, with Thetford Forest being\nthe only obvious boundary. This led to constant disputes about who owned what \u2013\na rivalry which has continued throughout the Middle Ages and into much more\nrecent times. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The \u2018Battle\u2019 of Lowestoft<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n In 2008, the\nBoundary Committee suggested that Lowestoft should become part of Norfolk,\nredrawing the county boundaries in a radical shake-up of local government. The\nargument was that the Suffolk town would benefit from having closer links with\nits coastal neighbour Great Yarmouth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n But angry\nresidents, upset at the prospect of being forced to \u2018move\u2019 to another county,\nheld protest marches and flag-raising ceremonies, and Lowestoft remains a part\nof Suffolk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Old Farm Derby<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The most\nobvious manifestation of the rivalry between Suffolk and Norfolk comes on the\nfootball pitch. Ipswich Town and Norwich City have been rivals ever since the\ntwo clubs were formed. The first match between the two took place in 1902, when\nboth clubs were still operating under amateur rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It was\noriginally called the East Anglian Derby but in more recent years it has been\ndubbed the Old Farm Derby, reflecting the arable nature of the two counties.\nIt\u2019s also a pun on the Old Firm Derby between the two Glasgow clubs, Rangers\nand Celtic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Initially\nIpswich, who could also boast of successes in the Championship, the FA Cup and\nin Europe, enjoyed more success in the derby. In recent years, though, Norwich\nhave held the upper hand, remaining unbeaten against their rivals for almost a\ndecade. Matches between the two are always keenly contested, with fans keen to\nclaim the title \u2018Pride of Anglia\u2019 for their team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Deuchar Cup<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The sporting\nrivalry exists on the rivers too. Rowing\u2019s Deuchar Cup was founded in 1909 by\nJJW Deuchar, a Norfolk JP who worked for Norwich Union Life. Although it was\nnot contested for several years, in more recent times the competition has been\nrevived, with the latest venue being the River Yare in Norfolk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The rowers\nare drawn from clubs based in their respective counties. Members of Deben,\nSudbury and Ipswich Rowing Clubs are among those from Suffolk who have taken\npart, while Norwich, Broadland and Yare have done battle on behalf of Norfolk. There are races for men\u2019s, women\u2019s and junior\nsections with each individual contest scoring points.
