Hamiltons is a worldwide name \u2013 and not just because we are one of the leading moving companies in East Anglia. There are around 50 places around the world called Hamilton, in countries as varied as Australia, America, Suriname, South Africa and Sierra Leone.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here we look\nat five of the biggest and most interesting Hamiltons \u2013 and how we can help you\nmove to all of them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hamilton, Australia<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Probably the\nbest known of Australia\u2019s five Hamiltons is a suburb of the city of Newcastle\nin New South Wales. Officially founded in 1871, it was originally a mining town,\nand was named after Edward Terrick Hamilton, who was governor of the board of\nthe Australian Agricultural Company, who owned and mined much of the land. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hamilton has\nnow become a thriving retail centre, with a distinctly cosmopolitan feel. In\nthe 1940s, a group of families from southern Italy settled in the town and\nthere is still a thriving Italian community here, known as \u2018Little Italy\u2019. The\ntotal population stands at around the 4,000 mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hamilton, Canada<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The largest Canadian\nHamilton is a port city on the banks of Lake Ontario, which has a population of\nmore than half a million people. It is named after George Hamilton, a 19th<\/sup>\ncentury businessman and politician. It is about 60 km to the south-west of\nToronto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The city\u2019s economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. It produces 60% of the country\u2019s steel and has been called the Steel Capital of Canada. Hamilton\u2019s most notable landmark is the Niagara Escarpment, a ridge which divides the city and is marked by a series of conservation areas and waterfalls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hamilton, New Zealand<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a\ncity on the country\u2019s North Island, with a population of around 160,000 people.\nIt was founded in 1864 and was named after Captain John Fane Charles Hamilton,\nwho was killed during a battle between Maoris and New Zealand government forces\nfor control of the land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hamilton is\na great place for young people to move to \u2013 the Waikato Institute of Technology\n(Wintec) and Waikato University account for around 40,000 of the city\u2019s population.\nDairy farming, manufacturing and retail are all key elements of the city\u2019s\neconomy.  The biggest tourist attraction\nis Hamilton Gardens, a 54-acre park with open lawns, a lake, a nursery, a\nconvention centre and a cemetery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hamilton, USA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are\nmoving house to America, then there are more than 30 places called Hamilton to\nchoose from \u2013 for instance, Alabama has one, while California has two, and\nIndiana three. Americans were always keen on naming their hometowns after\nprominent local people or landmarks, and they weren\u2019t too worried if someone\nelse had got there first. Lots of these were named after Alexander Hamilton,\none of the country\u2019s founding fathers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of these\nis a city in Ohio, which started out life as a fort built during the North-West\nIndian war in the 1790s. Now it is a town with a population of more than\n60,000,  In 1986, in a publicity-seeking\nmove, the city authorities voted to add an exclamation mark to the official\nname \u2013 although most maps don\u2019t use it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hamilton, Scotland<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are interested in house removals to Scotland, then this Lanarkshire town is around 12 miles south-east of Glasgow. It wasn\u2019t called Hamilton originally, but Cadzow. Its name was changed in the 15th<\/sup> century, after the Hamilton family, who were major landowners at the time, and who still are today. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hamilton\nPalace, to the north-east of the town, was the family seat for almost 300 years\nand was one of the largest and grandest stately homes in Britain. However, it\nwas demolished in 1927, and all its fabulous treasures \u2013 furniture, antiques\nand artworks \u2013 sold off. This was due to the cost of maintenance and subsidence\ncaused by the Hamiltons\u2019 own coal mine in nearby Bothwellhaugh.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However,\nprobably the most famous name to be associated with the town is that of Dr\nDavid Livingston, the celebrated explorer. He went to church here \u2013 St James\u2019s\nCongregational Church \u2013 and lived in the town\u2019s Burnbank Road for a short\nwhile. There is a plaque outside the property marking this connection. Today,\nHamilton has a population of over 50,000, making it the ninth largest place in\nScotland. Service industries and local government are among the town\u2019s major\nemployers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
