Local traditions continue to thrive across the world, and East Anglia is no exception. The counties of Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex have more than their fair share of unusual events, including two world championships. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are\nthinking of moving to East Anglia, here are five of the quirkiest, courtesy of\nHamiltons Removals. We have been helping people with commercial and domestic removals\nfor more than a quarter of a century and are based on the Norfolk\/Suffolk\nborder, in the heart of the region. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The World\nSnail Racing Championship, Norfolk<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Congham,\nnear King\u2019s Lynn, hosts an annual world championship in the unusual sport of\nsnail racing. The event has formed part of this north-west Norfolk village\u2019s\nannual fete for around half a century, after founder Tom Elwes first witnessed\na race in France. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To help the\ncompetitors on their way, the course is only 13 inches in length and the going\nis officially \u2018moist\u2019. as the race is held on a damp tablecloth. The champion\nreceives a tankard stuffed with lettuce. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The World\nPier Crabbing Championships, Norfolk<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The North\nNorfolk coastline is one of the best places in the world to catch crabs, and\nthe Cromer variety is a famous delicacy. The resort\u2019s association with this\ncrustacean is celebrated with another annual world championship, held every\nAugust. Competitors try to catch as many as they can, or the biggest one, and\nyou can enter either as a team or an individual. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maldon\nMud Race, Essex<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This race is\nheld over the bed of the River Blackwater every year \u2013 originally in winter,\nbut the date has now been moved to spring. It all started in 1973 when a\nregular at a local pub was challenged to serve a meal on the riverbank dressed\nin a dinner jacket. This evolved into a race across the river\u2019s thick mud to a\nbarrel of beer on the other side, at which point you were supposed to drink a\npint of it and race back. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The beer has\ndisappeared, but the race remains, with hundreds of people being happy to get\nstuck in, raising thousands of pounds for charity in the process. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Race\nof the Boggmen, Suffolk<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This started\nout as an annual contest between the farmworkers of Great Finborough and\nHaughley. In the late 19th<\/sup> century, a landowner had to choose\nbetween two teams drawn from each of these Mid Suffolk villages and decided the\nbest way to settle it was with a race. The first person to make it from Boyton\nHall to the Chestnut Horse pub in Great Finborough was declared the winner. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

These days\nthe race is still held between teams drawn from the two villages, but local\ncharities and good causes are the real winners. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Somerleyton\nBun and Penny Day, Suffolk <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On February\n14, the younger residents of this north Suffolk village are just as likely to\nbe thinking of buns as Valentine\u2019s cards. This is because every year on this\ndate \u2013 or on the school day nearest to it \u2013 the pupils at Somerleyton Primary\nSchool visit the village\u2019s impressive Hall. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once there,\nthey are welcomed by the Lord and Lady of the Manor and are expected to sing\ntraditional songs such as sea shanties, often with their own musical\naccompaniment. As a reward, they each receive an iced bun and money \u2013 which these\ndays means a 50p piece. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\ntradition is thought to have started in the 1840s, when Sir Morton Peto owned\nthe Hall. No one is sure about the reasons behind it, although one theory is\nthat he wanted to thank all the children who had worked in the fields over the\nsummer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
