<\/figure>\n\n\n\nChocolate<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Switzerland\nwas home to the first mass-produced chocolate, when Fran\u00e7ois-Louis\nCailler opened a factory in Vevey, on the shores of Lake Geneva, in the\nearly 19th<\/sup> century. However, the first bars were gritty and crumbly,\nand it wasn\u2019t until 1875 that they became the smooth confectionary that we know\ntoday. Daniel Peter, Cailler\u2019s son-in-law, developed milk chocolate with the\nhelp of his former neighbour Henri Nestl\u00e9<\/em>, who had invented condensed milk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Cailler and Nestl\u00e9<\/em> are still well-known brands today,\nalong with other market leaders including Lindt, Toblerone and Laderach. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Watches<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Although the Germans were the first people to make clocks small enough to\ncarry around, the Swiss led the way with the wristwatch. The industry owes a\nlarge debt to the 16th<\/sup> century religious reformer John Calvin, who\ndecided that citizens should not be allowed to wear other items of jewellery.\nMany goldsmiths switched their attention to watches, which were still allowed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Initially, Swiss watches were famous because of they were beautifully\nmade for a rich clientele. Over the years the influence of standardisation and\nprecision engineering meant Swiss watches became a byword for accuracy too.\nMajor brands such as Rolex, TAG Heuer and Omega are all based in the country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Army Knives<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Although Switzerland has a history of neutrality when it comes to wars,\nits military is responsible for one of the most popular tools of the past 140\nyears. Swiss army knives were first made in the 1880s, when the country\u2019s army\ndecided it needed to buy a tool suitable for a variety of tasks, from opening\ncanned food to taking rifles apart. The first knives were actually made in\nGermany, because Switzerland didn\u2019t have enough production capacity, and it\nwasn\u2019t until 1891 that they were made in their \u2018home\u2019 country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The first true Swiss army knives contained a main blade, a can opener, a\nrotary cutting tool, and grips made out of strong, dark wood. The product, which like Swiss watches is\nrenowned for its high-quality engineering, has been refined many times over the\nyears, with optional extras such as scissors, wire cutters, corkscrews,\ntweezers and toothpicks added at a fairly early stage. More recent additions\ninclude LED lights and USB sticks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Red Cross<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The idea of\nthe Red Cross was inspired by a young Swiss man, Henry Dunant, who witnessed\nthe bloody aftermath of a battle between the forces of imperial Austria and the\nFranco-Sardinian alliance. Thousands of men lay dead or dying on the\nbattlefield in Solferino, Italy, in 1859 and Dunant decided to do something\nabout it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n With the\nhelp of five other men from Geneva, he set up the International Committee for Relief\nto the Wounded, later to become the International Committee of the Red Cross\n(ICRC). The aim was to create an international relief society aimed at\nproviding care and comfort for wartime casualties. Its emblem was a red cross\non a white background \u2013 the inverse of the Swiss flag \u2013 and the ICRC is still\nbased in Geneva today. Dunant\u2019s work also led to the establishment of the\nGeneva Convention, which sets out how soldiers and civilians should be treated\nin wartime. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Banking<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Banking in Switzerland began in the early 18th<\/sup> century.\nMerchants brought home money after selling their goods abroad and needed\nsomewhere to keep it. Wegelin and Co was the first bank to be established in\n1741. Nowadays, more than 100,000 people are employed in the financial sector,\nand most of these are concentrated in Zurich. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The attraction of Swiss banks is not purely financial, although account-holders\ndo know that the Swiss economy \u2013 and its currency, the franc \u2013 is one of the\nsafest in the world.
