Say Paris and most people will think of the Eiffel Tower, the Notre Dame Cathedral and the Metro. But the French capital also has many other, more unusual claims to fame. The\nLouvre is the Most Visited Art Museum in the World <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Musee de\nLouvre had more visitors \u2013 10.2million \u2013 than any other art museum in the world\nin 2018, beating the likes of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and\nthe Tate Modern in London. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally a\nmilitary fortress, it became a royal palace in the 14th<\/sup> century and\nit wasn\u2019t until 1793 that part of it was turned into a museum. Probably its\nmost famous single item is the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci, pictured above.\nBut its collection includes more than 380,000 artworks \u2013 of which more than\n35,000 are on display at any one time \u2013 drawn from every period of history. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The City Doesn\u2019t Have Any Stop Signs<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The only stop\nsign in the whole of Paris used to be in the 16th<\/sup> Arrondissement, at\nthe exit of the driveway of a building company. The head of the Paris police\nconfirmed this in an official statement in 2012. But, less than two years\nlater, this sign had disappeared, leaving the city with none!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All motorists\nare expected to give way to oncoming traffic from the right, even in traffic hotspots.\nIf you are planning overseas moves to Paris and will be driving around the city\nonce you get here, there are also plenty of \u2018Do Not Enter\u2019 and \u2018No Left Turn\u2019\nsigns, to bring some order to the capital\u2019s roads. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It has Five Statues of Liberty<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The original 19th<\/sup> century statue in America was designed by French sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, and its metal framework was built by Gustave Eiffel, who is more famous for the city\u2019s tower which bears his name. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paris,\nhowever, has no fewer than five smaller versions of the statue \u2013 in the Mus\u00e9e\nD\u2019Orsay, the Jardin du Luxembourg, the Ile aux Cygnes, the Mus\u00e9e des Arts et\nM\u00e9tiers and the entrance to the Pont d\u2019Alma tunnel, although this last one is\nonly a replica of the flame. The Ile aux Cygnes statue, which was donated by\nAmerican citizens living in Paris in 1889, was turned around in 1937 to look\nwest, so that it faced its New York counterpart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s the City\nof Light<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 17th<\/sup>\ncentury, King Louis XIV wanted to make Paris a safer place for its citizens.\nSo, as well as increasing the numbers of police officers, lanterns were placed\non most of the main streets, while residents were asked to light their windows\nwith candles and oil lamps. As well as deterring would-be criminals, it also\nled to the city being dubbed \u2018La Ville-Lumiere\u2019, or the City of Light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The name is\nbelieved to have stuck because the city was a focus for the Age of\nEnlightenment. In the late 18th<\/sup> and early 19th<\/sup> centuries,\nParis was home to scientists, engineers, philosophers and poets, who all\nexchanged ideas and theories, and the French capital became renowned throughout\nthe world as a seat of learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s Not\nthe Only Place Called Paris<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are\nbelieved to be more than 30 places called Paris across the world \u2013 including in\nPanama, Ukraine, Sweden, Russia, Denmark and Puerto Rico. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

America\nalone has more than 20 cities, towns and communities which share a name with French\ncapital. Of these, Paris, Texas is probably the most famous, because of the 1984\nfilm of the same name which starred Harry Dean Stanton and Nastassja Kinski. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
