In the UK, February 14 is the day to remember your loved one \u2013 either in the form of cards, chocolates or flowers. But how is St Valentine\u2019s Day celebrated in other countries?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Philippines<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As well as\nthe usual celebrations which are the same as in the West, the day is often\nmarked by the ultimate expression of love \u2013 getting married. Thousands of\ncouples across the country tie the knot, sometimes in mass wedding ceremonies,\nand often in public places. Some local authorities provide venues and officiate\nfor free, and married couples often add to the numbers by renewing their vows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

South Africa<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those\npeople thinking about domestic or commercial removals to South Africa, this is\na country where women can wear their heart on their sleeve \u2013 literally! On\nFebruary 14, many of them pin the name of their loved ones on their sleeves, in\nwhat was originally thought to be an ancient Roman tradition called Lupercalia.\nIn some parts of the country, men do this as well. At least this way you are\nguaranteed to learn whether you have any admirers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Japan<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here the\nonus is definitely on the woman to make the first move \u2013 but the men don\u2019t get\nout of it either! On February 14, ladies buy chocolates for their loved ones,\nand the more expensive they are, the stronger their feelings are thought to be.\nHigh-quality ones are reserved for husbands and boyfriends, while cheaper\n(so-called obligation chocolates) are given to friends and colleagues. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, a\nmonth later on March 14, the men are expected to return the favour, on what is\nknown as White Day. Their gift, often jewellery or lingerie, should be two or\nthree times the value of the chocolate. If it isn\u2019t, then the relationship\ncould be considered to be over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finland and Estonia<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Finnish\nand the Estonians opt for a much lower-key celebration on February 14. They\nexchange presents and cards with friends and family rather than their loved\nones. Both countries have called Valentine\u2019s Day \u2018Friendship Day\u2019. People also\nmark the occasion by decorating their homes with colourful ribbons and lights,\nwhile live shows and musical performances are also common in both countries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Denmark<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Denmark,\nValentine\u2019s Day cards were originally called \u2018Lover\u2019s Cards\u2019. These could\neither include pictures of the sender, or white pressed flowers known as\nsnowdrops. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nowadays,\nthese have both been superseded by more conventional Valentine\u2019s cards,\nalthough one tradition does remain. On February 14, men send their loved ones little\npoems or love notes, known as gaekkebrev. The message is signed anonymously\nwith dots, and if the receiver guesses the name correctly, she can expect to\nreceive an Easter egg later in the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
