About Amsterdam

Among the most photographed of cities in the world, Amsterdam may be small but it is perfectly formed and architecturally stunning. 18th century Classicism merges with early 19th century Art Deco and modern forms mix with Gothic and Renaissance influences to present a mishmash of building styles that is both hectic and very pleasing.

One of the most beautiful cities in Europe, it is home to just around 750,000 people and as such, in European city terms, could be regarded as little more than a glamorous, cosmopolitan and romantic village. Canals, tramways and bicycles make up a typical Amsterdam street scene, all set against the backdrop of stylish, artistic graffiti which adorns many of the shop fronts, itself lending a charming rawness to the character of the place, reflecting its diversity and tolerance.

The capital of Holland offers all the benefits and advantages of a big city including culture, nightlife, great restaurants and excellent transport links. At the same time though it remains relatively peaceful, due in large part to its network of canals and its expanses of green space and public parkland.

Amsterdam has a vibrancy and a culture all its own. Famed for its many brightly coloured coffee shops, legal smoking of marijuana and its red light district which lend their own distinctive flavour to the place, the city also offers a vast array of performances, festivals and cultural events which take place throughout the year. From Amsterdam’s fashion week in early January through to the Tangomagia festival around Christmas time, there is always something going on.  These events aside however, street performers and live bands can be seen playing in bars and cafes throughout the city on a daily and nightly basis.

Amsterdam is the city for antique and curios shopping, second-hand bookshops and diamonds. The shopkeepers generally take Monday mornings off to extend their weekends, but stay open later on Thursdays to compensate and many of the supermarkets stay open quite late into the evenings during the week. Window-shopping in the streets and alleyways is a real pleasure, made easier by the fact that much of the city centre is pedestrianised. However buses, trams, taxis and bicycles are still very much in evidence so new visitors need to be on their guard.

Never particularly cold, Amsterdam is at its warmest from June to August, with temperatures in the low to mid 20’s C. The air is relatively humid and fog is common in autumn and spring with stronger winds from October to March.
